2025 Build Season

Reefscape

This season’s FIRST Robotics Competition is themed “REEFSCAPE”!

Robots explore ocean life beneath the surface, and take steps toward creating a healthy environment. This challenging game requires teams to construct and assemble a robot that is successful at placing coral on reefs, and can catapult algae onto a hanging net during both the autonomous and teleoperated phases of the game. Human players play an important role in collecting points by processing algae and handing coral to robots who will in turn score in the reef zone. In the final moments of a match, robots from both alliances will race to the barge where they will attempt to suspend on their cage to reach the surface.

Strategic Game plan

This season our bot is focusing on coral scoring via a 3 part, elevator, arm, and wrist system. A thrifty bot 2 stage allows our bot to score the high L4 branch, and the low L1 trough of the coral reef. From this Elevator a rigid arm extends out and allows our intake to gather game pieces off the floor and then collapse back fully within our frame perimeter. Our intake isn’t limited to one game piece however – our unique spring actuated intake can also expand to clamp down on algae. Furthermore, our bot is competitive in the endgame with a pneumatic hang swiftly secures us to the cage and lifts us off the ground. This season our bot will be flying across the field thanks to a drivebase propelled by Kraken motors.

It isn’t only effective mechanical systems that make our robot competitive; preset scoring positions ensure our robot can quickly cycle from the floor to the reef with the press of a button. Additionally, our bot’s vision system is able to use an AI model trained on the coral and reef to scan a reef segment and automatically determine the highest scoring open position. In turn our drivers can automatically score without having to take the time to align the arm.
